Weights expected in late October.

Main report

Mistral opened the public API preview of Large 4 on October 6, 2026, with weights planned for month-end. Its documentation lists multimodal inputs and a one-million-token context window. API access and downloadable weights are different release stages.

An API sends requests to a provider’s servers. Weights are the learned model data needed for a potential self-hosted deployment. These approaches have different infrastructure, operating and data-management requirements.

Analysis

TBN Grow analysis: deployment choice matters alongside model rankings. A document assistant should be tested for correct extraction and answers in the languages customers use. An agent needs checks for permissions, task completion and recovery after failure.

One good answer on a short document does not establish reliability across a large collection. Include missing information, ambiguous questions and out-of-scope requests in a trial. These are suggested tests, not our measured Large 4 results.

What to watch

Before integration, run representative tasks and record accuracy, response time and cost per accepted result. Include the human effort required to correct errors; token prices alone do not capture operating cost.

Watch for the actual weights release, license, hardware requirements and preview API changes. Keep a fallback for important workflows rather than migrating solely on announcement benchmarks.
